Homestead Resources Receives Tax Credits to Update Historic Jeff Senior Centre

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 7, 2024

Lafayette, Ind. – Homestead Resources, a local nonprofit housing organization, was awarded Tax Credits to rehabilitate a multifamily rental property located in Lafayette, Indiana. The organization owns and operates two rental communities in Lafayette including the Jeffersonian and the Historic Jeff Senior Centre. The organization was selected to receive a 9% Low Income Housing Tax Credit award from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) through a competitive process.

The Historic Jeff Senior Centre is located at 619 N 9th Street near downtown Lafayette and is adjacent to the Jeffersonian, a newly constructed apartment community the nonprofit opened in December 2025. This building was originally converted into affordable housing in 2006, after the Lafayette School Corporation donated the land and former school building to Homestead Resources. Marie Morse, Executive Director of Homestead Resources said, “Our board has continued to feel a responsibility to keep this very loved building well maintained and an asset to the community, while maintaining its historical charm.”

This project will be a partnership between several organizations both public and private and include IHCDA, City of Lafayette, City of West Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis, First Merchants Bank, Stenz Construction, ALK Development and the Historic Jeff neighborhood association. The tax credits will be used to update all 74 units of affordable rental housing, and the building will undergo substantial rehab to ensure that it continues to offer safe, affordable, well-maintained homes for our seniors for many years to come.

The Historic Jeff Senior Centre is a Section 42 tax credit housing development that includes one-bedroom and two-bedroom units. The organization will develop a construction timeline over the next couple of weeks with completion slated for 2027.

Marie Morse, Executive Director of Homestead Resources said, “We appreciate the continued support from the community and from all of our partners, and we look forward to keeping the community updated on our progress and construction timeline.”
